12 September 2024 (completed)
Auspiciously completed the Konchog Chidu and Tseyang Gugpa Puja. On this day, the 64th birthday of Shangpa Rinpoche, there were no festivities as per Rinpoche's wishes. Mayumla, Dolma Tsomo (1928-26 March 2024), mother of Rinpoche passed away peacefully about 6 months ago. The chinese translation of Rinpoche's biograpghy was released. Each copy at SGD8/- is available from Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre. Rinpoche held back his tears as he recalled and mentioned about Mayumla. Everyone was moved by the strong bond between them. We dedicate all the prayers, good thoughts, speech and actions to Rinpochela. May he live long, healthy, happy and may all his dharma activities be swiftly actualized.

Introduction and Oral transmission of Namgyal Tongchod by Shangpa Rinpoche on 7 September 2024
This text is from Karma Kagyud lineage by the first Jamgon Kongtrol Lodro Thaye (1813-1899). He was a Tibetan Buddhist scholar, poet, artist, physician, tertön and polymath. Shangpa Rinpoche translated the text into English for the purpose of this puja.
Namgyal Tongchod is a very popular practice in Tibetan Buddhism. There are numerous merits to the practice. Namgyalma or Ushnisha Vijaya in sanskrit, manifests from the crown of the Buddha. One day, a god was in the dying process. Gods are aware of their impending demise and which realm they will next fall into. He requested King Indra, the ruler of the heaven, to help him. Alas, King Indra did not know how to help. One day, King Indra was in the presence of the Buddha and sought Buddha's advice. Buddha taught Ushnisha Vijaya to King Indra, who in turned taught it with the dying god. The god extended his life in the heavens.
Since then, it is practiced mainly in Kangyur. Various methods of practice were later composed by different masters of different lineages.
Namgyal Tongchod comprises of 1,000 offerings of torma (food), light and incense. These three are the main offerings. other offerings can also be included. The 1,000 offerings also include 1,000 recitation of the dharani and circumambulation. These offerings can be shared with all sentient beings, including the lower beings.
By doing this grand puja, one benefit is the extension of life force, so that one may start or prolong one's dharma practice. It can also purify defilements, prevent one from being reborn into the lower realms, gives peace of mind and many other benefits. The bumpa or vase containing the nectar from Namgyalma can clear obstacles. Sangha and volunteers put in a lot of effort in the creation of this majestic mandala with the 1,000 sets of offerings and shrine that you see today. I will now give you the oral transmission, just listen to my voice. (Rinpoche gave oral transmission) There will be many rounds (1,000) circumambulation of the mandala. During which, you will each hold a flower in prayer mudra while reciting the mantra. The most important part of the sadhana is the calling of Namgyalama and the assembly of the yidam. We receive the blessing in the form of mantra. Recite with sincerity and devotion such like the mantra is radiating out. The mantra then returns back to us and all sentient beings, in the form of brilliant light. The pure essence of samasara and nirvana are gathered and absorbed into the two siddhis. More sharing on Namgyal Tongchod by Shangpa Rinpoche on 8 September 2024
On the second day of Namgyal Tongchod prayer, Rinpoche shared that this 2024 mantra text is slightly different from the previous 2018 text. That does not mean that one mantra is wrong or the other is right. The differences could be due to translation. Each is authentic from its own source. The 2018 small booklet containing the mantra of Namgyal Tongchod is also authentic and that mantra has been used for many centuries. One should not look at the two books or sources as wrong or right. There were earlier and later translated versions. All are valid and full of blessings. Don't compare them or check which is wrong or right. These should not be in the mind. The Namgyalma image that you see here on the shrine and on the cover of the text has six arms and three heads. But the text by the first Jamgon Kongtrol Lodro Thaye mentioned Nagngyalma has one face and two arms. This 2024 text is based on the early transmission of Nyingma. Previously, what we did in 2018 was Sama (new text). Nonetheless, they are essentially the same Namgyalma, only different in form. The mantra is also slightly different - old vs new versions. Next time in the future if we conduct Namgyalma Tongchod puja again. I will try to make a thangka of Namgyalma with one face and two arms based on our Karma Kagyud text. Thank you.

About Ushnisha Vijaya Puja - by Shangpa RinpocheAfter Buddha Shakyamuni attained enlightenment, he expounded various teachings before passing into parinirvana. Ushnisha Vijaya is one of the most important teachings that Buddha taught during his lifetime.
The source of this tantra originated from the Buddha, during his stay in Tushita heaven. At that time, there was a god called Atisthira whose life span was ending soon. He felt weaker by the day and experienced vivid signs of falling into the lower realms. As a god, he was able to see his next rebirth clearly and he was terrified by his visions. He approached Indra, the King of Gods for help. However, King Indra could not help him and quickly sought Lord Buddha's help without further delay. Out of great compassion, Buddha conferred the Ushnisha Vijaya Dharani to King Indra, the latter transmitted the dharani to Atisthira. Atisthira practiced accordingly and within a short period of time, he purified his karma of rebirth in the lower realms. His life span was also prolonged and so he remained happily in the heaven.
Subsequently, the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara spread the teaching of this dharani and many other tantras, in order to benefit all sentient beings in this world. Lord Buddha personally explained the benefits of this dharani. He mentioned that the Ushnisha Dharani is an antidote to being reborn in the lower realms. Merely hearing it once would purify our obscurations that have been accumulated for hundreds of kalpas. One would also be able to transmigrate between Buddhas’ realms. Even if one’s life span were ending, his or her life-span would be prolonged. By reciting the dharani, one’s sufferings in the animal, hungry ghost and hell realms will cease.
A comprehensive Ushnisha Vijaya Puja is the 1,000 offerings puja which is effective in pacifying sickness and untimely death, purifying negative karma, prolonging life-span, as well as gaining prosperity and success in all spiritual and worldly aspects. This puja is very popular in Tibet and has been practiced by all the different schools of Tibetan Buddhism. It mainly comprises of the offering of 1,000 lamps, 1,000 tormas, 1,000 flowers, 1,000 recitations of dharani, with many other associated offerings and ceremonial procedures.
This puja is classified under the Kriya tantra, hence practitioners are required to take the 8 precepts and have a vegetarian diet. Cleanliness is extremely important during the whole practice.
As it is such a meritorious and beneficial practice, Karma Kagyud Buddhist Centre is inspired to organize this puja for the very first time, for the benefit of all sentient beings and particularly for Singapore, to bring forth everlasting peace, harmony and prosperity to the nation and its vicinity.
KKBC sincerely hopes more people will join and benefit from this profound puja. May all gain longevity, purification of negative karma and may the various natural disasters of the world be overcome.

Essence of my speech upon receiving the award:
I am from Nepal, the birth place of Buddha, and currently I stay in Singapore.
Thank you for inviting me and selecting me as awardee. For the movement of peace, I personally feel I need to do more than what I have done.
Peace also means happiness that everyone deserves. There are two types of happiness - that is temporary and ultimate. Temporary is from sensual pleasures and ultimate is from meditation to realize the ultimate truth. For this, we need to initiate with fulfilling the temporary, and that will lead to ultimate.
Earlier, many speakers spoke on meditation to bring about peace. These are from various cultures and religions, but when come it boils down to peace, the united approach is towards world peace.
I wish you well and let us all work together to achieve the peace and harmony for the world.
Thank you.
Deeply honoured,Shangpa 24 August 2024

Both of these children’s homes are trustworthy organizations devoted to the care of orphans and children, for various reasons, can no longer be cared for by their biological families. Through the moral support and efforts of Shangpa Foundation, along with donations from generous donors, contributions were made to both these homes. We wish the children grow up healthy and well, lead happy and meaningful lives wherever they are. We also wish these organizations continue their wonderful humanitarian activities for many years to come.
